A mountaineering couple experienced dramatic moments in St. Anton am Arlberg in Tyrol on Wednesday: a 55-year-old German woman slipped on a snowfield and took her companion with her. While the man managed to hold on to a rock, the woman fell about 150 meters down.
The German woman and her 61-year-old compatriot were hiking uphill on the so-called Bruckmannweg from the Konstanzerhütte towards Wannenjöchli (2,633 metres). Due to the snow conditions, both were equipped with trekking poles, according to the police.
Woman slid toward companion
In the area of a section where they had to descend about 50 meters in height, the 61-year-old marched ahead and after about 30 meters in height he stopped on a dry spot. And then it happened: “Suddenly the companion, who was walking a few meters behind, fell for unknown reasons and slid towards the man,” the supervisor reports.
The 61-year-old tried to prevent the woman from falling. But without success! In the end, both people slid downhill uncontrollably across the snowfield. “While the man was able to stop his fall on a ledge, his 55-year-old companion fell over it and ended up about 150 meters below the snowfield,” the researchers continued.
To the clinic by emergency helicopter
The woman suffered serious injuries, the 61-year-old escaped with minor injuries. After initial treatment, both were flown by emergency helicopter to the clinic in Innsbruck.
