Mega fire operation – smoke over London as historic building burns

Date:

The London Fire Brigade responded to a fire at the historic Somerset House building. The fire service said about 15 fire engines and around 100 firefighters were at the scene. They were battling flames on a section of the roof. “The cause of the fire is not yet known.”

Built in the late 18th century, Somerset House is one of the most famous buildings in London and is now used as a cultural centre.

It is located in the city centre on the River Thames and houses, among other things, exhibition spaces.

Sky News television showed a video on social media showing smoke rising above the building. The BBC also reported that plumes of smoke could be seen from several blocks away.

Emergency services urged people to avoid the area if possible due to the heavy smoke.

Local shops must close their windows and doors, the London Ambulance Service said on Platform X.
