Syringe contaminated – girl (4) dies during oral surgery after anesthesia

Date:

Four-year-old Emilia from Hesse, Germany, was given a contaminated drug during an innocent dental procedure. The accused anesthesiologist (67) is not a blank slate.

A 67-year-old anesthesiologist, who has already been convicted of murder by negligence, is on trial at the regional court in Frankfurt am Main (D) on four counts of serious bodily harm and bodily harm resulting in death. On September 29, 2021, four-year-old Emilia died after dental surgery under general anesthesia in a dental practice in Kronberg.

Anesthetics contaminated
The little girl broke a tooth while playing and had to be repaired under anesthesia. According to the prosecutor, the vial of anesthetic that the defendant injected into her was contaminated with the germinating fungus Candid and two other bacterial cultures.

Septic shock
When she woke up, the little girl was getting worse. Instead of calling for help, the German injected her with another dose of the anesthetic propofol. When the doctor called the rescuers much too late, they could only determine that the girl was dead. Emilia went into septic shock and her circulation failed.

During the trial, the anesthesiologist came across as arrogant and unreasonable. His lawyer read a half-hearted apology: “I probably made unknowingly mistakes in the area of hygiene.”

Same syringe used multiple times
Dr. W. is accused of having used disposable syringes several times for cost reasons. He administered several medications with a single syringe and, according to ‘Bild’, repeatedly left the children alone under anesthesia to save himself an assistant. On the day Emilia died, he performed a total of five general anesthesias, with serious complications as a result. Several children then had to be treated in intensive care and given artificial respiration. Some of them struggled with death.

Back in action just hours after Emilia’s death
In the Emilia case, according to the public prosecutor, W. should have called the emergency number no later than 10 p.m. But this did not happen until around 1 a.m.

Terrifying detail: just a few hours after the child’s death, the accused anesthetist was back at work. In Hesse, he gave a five-year-old child a contaminated anesthetic. This boy also became seriously ill.

The German faces a prison sentence of several years. An initial seven-day trial is planned, with a verdict expected at the end of September.
