At 2:00 a.m. a wrong-way driver (47) from the Kirchdorf an der Krems district caused a serious accident on the Westautobahn: he crashed with full force into the oncoming car of a 19-year-old from the Linz-Land district. The young man died in hospital.
Emergency services were called out Saturday night to rescue people after a traffic accident on the A1. The serious accident occurred on the Salzburger Weg between Eberstalzell and Vorchdorf, shortly before the Vorchdorf motorway exit.
Earlier, at 02:03, there was a report of a ghost driver on the route between Vorchdorf and Regau. The ghost driver was apparently driving in the direction of Vienna.
Trapped in the wreckage
As a result of the violent head-on collision, the 47-year-old’s car was thrown against the concrete median wall there and the 19-year-old’s car came to a stop on the driver’s side of the hard shoulder. Two people were trapped in their vehicle after the accident and had to be freed by the three fire brigades that were called.
Suffered serious injuries
A 59-year-old Czech man who was following the accident collided with his car into one of the two accident vehicles. While this man was unharmed, the 19-year-old and the 47-year-old suffered serious injuries. The 19-year-old was taken to the Wels Clinic, where he died a short time later. The 47-year-old was flown by rescue helicopter to the Linz Accident Hospital.
The A1 was closed for five hours towards Salzburg
The investigation into the exact cause of the accident is still ongoing. The A1 West motorway was closed for five hours in the direction of Salzburg between the Eberstalzell exit and Vorchdorf. A drone from the fire brigade was also called to the scene to record the accident. The clean-up work could then be carried out.
