New scandal involving an Austrian pig farm with an AMA quality mark, this time in the Lower Austrian district of Korneuburg: animal rights activists found appalling conditions. On fully slatted floors without litter, sick and injured pigs were found next to dead and partly already rotten animals. A complaint has been filed.
The company has an animal stock of more than 2000 pigs, the association against animal factories reports via broadcast. The animal rights activists informed an official veterinarian on Thursday, who subsequently carried out an inspection at the company. It is said that she could not hide her horror at the circumstances.
Sick and injured animals
Photos from the dung farm show injured animals with bitten tails, others also show wounds on other parts of the body. There were also some sick pigs with eye infections, for example.
Dead pigs among live
They are stored on fully slatted floors without litter in a very limited space. Particularly shocking: among the pigs are also cadavers showing varying degrees of decomposition. Dead animals were also found in the corridor and between the bays.
Balluch: ‘It can’t go on like this’
The VGT subsequently filed a complaint against the company. Animal rights activists also gathered as a result to protest against animal suffering. “One thing is clear: it cannot go on like this. From the point of view of the pigs as well as the consumers, the public and the pig industry itself,” explains VGT chairman Martin Balluch.
“At the beginning of July, the government wants to make a decision on a reform of the animal welfare law,” he continued. The one who went for inspection in May, “but let the pigs stand in the rain. This discovery shows once again the urgency for action,” said Balluch, who spoke out in favor of “the abolition of pig farming on fully slatted floors without litter”.
Appalling conditions in the Carinthian fattening farm
It was not until the beginning of April that a pig farm in Carinthia made the headlines, which also sold meat with the AMA quality mark. The conditions in which the animals had to live were also shocking. AMA subsequently revoked the company’s hallmark certificate.
