Army of the Year – Carinthian deputy lieutenant saved a boy’s life

Date:

Every year the Austrian Armed Forces honors soldiers for their achievements in various categories. The “Special Award” in the “Civil Courage” category went to Vice Lieutenant Johann Kitz of the Klagenfurt Army Logistics Center in the Laudon Barracks.

Civic courage requires courage and taking responsibility in critical situations – the best example of this is the Carinthian Johann Kitz: On the way to a family celebration, he saw a group of young boys on the side of the road – one of them was bleeding profusely from his head. The deputy lieutenant did not hesitate for long and immediately carried out first aid measures, while his partner alerted the rescuers.

The twelve-year-old had to have surgery on his head for several hours. Thanks to the quick and professional actions of Johann Kitz, the boy’s life was ultimately saved.

Soldiers embody core values and humanity
“For soldiers, civil courage is an expression of integrity, loyalty and responsibility – values that are important both in service and in everyday life,” explains the Military Command of Carinthia: “Soldiers are obliged to recognize dangers and address grievances suits, even if they entail personal risks.”

Minister of Defense is proud
The efforts of the trained first aider were recognized on November 13 during the “Soldier of the Year 2024” event in Upper Austria. “The presentation of the awards gives me the opportunity to say thank you and bring the winners – on behalf of everyone – before the curtain,” said Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner (ÖVP), proud of the Austrian soldiers.
