Rapid test positive – cattle TB: farm closed after suspected case

Date:

It was quiet for a long time, but now the fear of bovine tuberculosis (TB) is spreading again in Vorarlberg. After abnormalities occurred in a cattle during slaughter in Germany, a farm in the Oberbregenzerwald had to be temporarily closed.

It is not yet certain whether the cattle were actually infected with tuberculosis, but the rapid test was positive. Now we have to wait for the final results. Until then, the farm where the animal came from will remain closed. However, milk deliveries are exempt from the ban: the milk can be used as long as it is pasteurized before further use.

10,000 cattle tested
As a precaution, Vorarlberg veterinarians will conduct large-scale tests on the farms again in December. In total, approximately 10,000 cattle in 700 stables will be checked – in the “risk areas” of Klostertal and Montafon, all cattle will be checked; and cows are even tested.

Infection by deer
This effort is not unfounded: the cattle remain on the farms in the side valleys of Vorarlberg until well into September. There is the possibility of contact with red deer, which are considered carriers of tuberculosis.

Only in October, two deer in Montafon tested positive for the disease, and in four other cases from the Oberbregenzerwald there is at least a suspicion of tuberculosis, but there is no definitive result yet.
