By chance, a resident of an apartment complex on the Völkermarkt discovered a cellar fire on Thursday. Some residents had to be taken to hospital. Including a small child.
It was shortly after 3:30 PM when the apartment owner went into the basement to get Christmas decorations. Once in the basement, the man accidentally discovers a fire. He immediately alerted the emergency services, who immediately declared a major alarm. The fire brigades Völkermarkt, Gattersdorf, St. Stefan ob Haimburg, St. Margarethen ob Töllerberg, Kühnsdorf and Peratschitzen rush to the house together with the Red Cross.
Fire chief is deployed
“Because there was already heavy smoking in the stairwell, the fire brigade had to free the residents trapped on the balcony using a ladder,” the Carinthian state police said. And in the meantime, the Red Cross is setting up a medical center where residents can receive primary care.
Because smoke poisoning cannot be ruled out in four residents, including a four-month-old toddler, they are taken to hospital by the emergency services.
In the meantime, the 92 firefighters can bring the fire under control. Due to the fire, the apartment complex is currently uninhabitable. The residents organized alternative neighborhoods.
