On Twitter, the Ukrainian ambassador to Germany sharply attacked the authors of a call for an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine. “Not again, what a bunch of pseudo-intellectual losers. You should all go to hell with your defeatist ‘advice’. Goodbye,” Andriy Melnyk wrote angrily.
In Die Zeit, prominent German figures, journalists and scientists called on Western governments to make every effort to ensure that Russia and Ukraine “come to a negotiated solution in the near future”. A “major diplomatic offensive” is needed. Continuing the war is not the solution to the problem and is causing “massive humanitarian, economic and environmental emergencies around the world”.
“Restore Peace to the Continent”
Europe faces the task of restoring and long-term securing peace on the continent. “This requires developing a strategy to end the war as quickly as possible,” the authors continued.
The West must do everything in its power to persuade the governments of Russia and Ukraine to suspend hostilities. “Economic sanctions and military support must be integrated into a political strategy aimed at a gradual de-escalation towards reaching a ceasefire,” the appeal reads.
Indonesian President: Ask Putin for Ceasefire
Indonesian President Joko Widodo also called on his Russian and Ukrainian colleagues to engage in a dialogue. “The war must end and the global food chains must be reactivated,” Widodo said. He will also urge Russian President Vladimir Putin to order an immediate ceasefire.
