Two employees of the Panini Group, the world leader in the production of stickers, have been sentenced to prison terms by a court in the Italian city of Modena for stealing albums and stickers from the company and then selling them worldwide via the internet. According to researchers, collectors had paid large sums for the sticker sheets and decals.
As the Roman daily “Il Messaggero” reported Friday, a 58-year-old employee of the company was sentenced to 20 months in prison for the illegal trade. A 70-year-old former colleague and accomplice lasted eleven months.
According to the report, the 58-year-old had worked at Panini for 30 years and managed to move through the group without attracting attention. In the evenings, after his colleagues left the publishing house, he collected stickers and whole ribbons of decals. With the help of his ex-colleague, he took the material home and sold it on the Internet.
The illegal trade flourished for two years. After that, the company realized several albums were missing and hired a detective to investigate the case. The two men were eventually unmasked using video surveillance systems.
