Many Styrians are going to have a restless evening and a worrying night: from the late afternoon there were local strong wind gusts and heavy rain – it mainly affected the greater area of Graz. Dozens of fire brigades are present. From Tuesday it should be quieter again.
In the afternoon the first thunderstorms reached Styria, such as the Ennstal and the Obere Murtal. “But there is still nothing to worry about,” said ZAMG meteorologist Veronika Hatvan in Graz around 4 p.m. But that changed. At 6:30 pm the first violent front moved over Öblarn – a stream burst its banks and a cellar flooded. However, a few minutes later it was sunny again.
Especially in the area of Graz
But the front, as expected, continued to move east. In Fohnsdorf, for example, lightning struck a group of trees. Around 7 p.m. the front erupted for the first time over the greater area of Graz. Strong gusts of wind were followed by the first heavy downpour, sometimes with hail, as this video from the Auster sports pool shows.
Also in the Elisabethstrae of Graz there is water, as readers report, the fire brigade is already in action. The front had consequences not only in but also around Graz: in Frohnleiten a cellar was flooded, in Vasoldsberg a tree had fallen on the street, in Gratkorn a power pole had fallen, in Hart bei Graz a tree fell on a power line and in Eggersdorf there is a water entrance to the culture hall.
20 fire brigades have already been deployed in the vicinity of Graz, says city fire brigade spokesman Herbert Buchgraber. “Warnings are being added all the time.” While initially the north of the district was affected, such as Deutschfeistritz, the focus later shifted to the east (for example, Laßnitzhöhe and Eggersdorf). According to Buchgraber, the damage can be extensive, luckily no injuries have been reported so far.
Train connection interrupted
The train connection from Graz to Gleisdorf is currently interrupted due to fallen trees. A track replacement service was set up, but no one was injured.
situation remains tense
Not everything can be clear at night: in the Upper Murtal, in the Mürztal, in the peripheral mountains (from Fischbach to western Styria), but also in the area of Graz and in the south-east, large amounts of rain fall. to be expected. The Zamg speaks of 40 to 80 millimeters per square meter! Thunderstorms and hail are also possible.
More stable weather from Tuesday
The good news: Tuesday will gradually calm down, although showers are possible again in the afternoon. Wednesday should be completely hassle free. From today’s perspective, Thursday and Friday will be more unstable again, but according to Hatvan, the storms should not reach Monday’s intensity.
