Bernard Kerik, who worked as a New York police chief, died at the age of 69 during the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Kerik lost his “private fight against an illness on Thursday,” said FBI boss Kash Patel on X.
Patel praised the former policy chef, who was celebrated as a hero and was later convicted of corruption, as “a hunter, a patriot and one of the bravest officials in the United States”.
Kerik coordinated rescue work after attacks
Kerik was under the mayor of New York Rudolph Giuliani Chief. After the attacks on the World Trade Center, he coordinated the rescue work, looked for survivors in the ruins and was therefore considered a hero for many residents of the city.
Former US President George W. Bush wanted to make him Homeland Protection Minister in 2005, but Kerik eventually withdrew his candidacy.
Rescue 2009
Due to corruption, tax evasion and false statements, he was found guilty in 2009 and accepted a punishment of almost 139,000 euros. Because of his confession, he was able to avoid a possible maximum fine of 61 years in prison and was sentenced to four years in prison.
Kerik had a dazzling past: the son of a sex worker who was killed four years after his birth, spent his childhood in New York as a street boy. The school dropout emerged as a martial artist, became a navy police officer and then Bodyguard of the Saudi Arab Royal Family. After his return to the United States, he rose to the “Super-Cop” of the Anti-drug department of the New York police and eventually the police chief of the city.
