The number of fatal alpine accidents increased by 16 percent in 2024. The Austrian mountain rescue even registered a new high with more than 10,000 missions.
One thing counts in the Alpine Emergency Care: a functioning collaboration between the operational organizations. However, a new record value shows how much the requirements for the emergency services increase: with a total of 10,097 missions, the Austrian Mountain Rescue Service 2024 registered an increase of more than four percent compared to the previous year.
Growing challenges for emergency services
There are currently 12,880 volunteers in Austria. Together with the Alpine Police, Flight Rescue, Fire Brigade, the army and many other emergency services, they are ready to help the Alpine site quickly and efficiently.
In very visited areas they have to move several times a day – often under extreme conditions such as snowstorms, on high heat or in the dark.
Ries on personal responsibility
A large part of the dangers can be reduced with good preparation. In fact, many Alpine -Nood situations would be avoidable: lack of tour planning, lack of danger of consciousness or self -transfer are among the most common causes.
