Organ failure threatens – outbreak of new virus discovered in China

Date:

A new virus, similar to the corona virus, is said to be emerging in China, both international scientists and Taiwan report. The Langya Henipa virus is also transmitted from animals to humans and in the worst cases can lead to organ failure in humans.

According to the Taiwan Centers for Disease Control, 35 infections have already been diagnosed in China, affecting the Shandong and Henan regions, the Taipei Times reports. The new pathogen is also reported in the “New England Journal of Medicine” — symptoms include fever, fatigue, cough and loss of appetite. According to the journal, more than every third affected person suffers from liver failure and eight percent of patients have been diagnosed with kidney failure.

Every fourth shrew carries pathogens
What sets Langya henipavirus apart from SARS-CoV-2: Apparently it cannot be passed from person to person. It is said to be transmitted by animals such as dogs or goats. The shrew is suspected to be the original host – the pathogen was found in 27 percent of the rodents studied.

Taiwan Authority Deputy Director Chuang Jen Hsiang also said the 35 patients had not been in close contact with each other. Virus transmission through human contact is therefore considered rare.

Genome sequencing method currently in progress
In Taiwan, the virus outbreak is being monitored with care: a standardized genome sequencing method is being developed to quickly identify the pathogen. It should be available within a week. In addition, the transmission routes are examined in detail and it is determined whether similar diseases occur in native species in Taiwan.
