Karner: “Is Illegal” – Ministries disagree on THC limit behind the wheel

Date:

The Ministry of Transport’s consideration of introducing a limit for THC behind the wheel, such as for alcohol, has received little enthusiasm from the Ministry of the Interior.

So even if driving ability is not restricted, the following should still apply: Once cannabis is proven, sanctions are imposed. On the other hand, there is the background to the Gewessler department’s proposal that even when you are fit to drive again, the active ingredient in cannabis, THC, will remain detectable for several days.

Karner rejects “releasing fantasies”.
In any case, Interior Minister Karner would like to end the debate, it seems. Because the “Kurier” also quoted from a broadcast from the minister on the subject: “More control and a clear rejection of fantasies about release”, he said of “drug liberalization proposals from the transport department”.

Controls need to be strengthened
The number of reports against drug traffickers has increased significantly in recent years. According to Ö1, there were more than 6,300 last year. Since 2017, the police have been using special saliva testing equipment to detect THC. Every year additional devices are added and there are also more specially trained police officers. According to the Ministry of the Interior, the controls will be tightened up further in the coming years.
