In the current “political duel” on krone.tv between Eva Glawischnig and Andreas Mölzer, Herbert Kickl, in addition to the controversial FPÖ poster “Your will be done”, also addresses the issue of a possible citizens’ initiative on the death penalty, the SPÖ’s demand for inheritance tax and the victory of the AfD in the German states of Saxony and Thuringia.
The FPÖ poster caused a stir. Eva Glawischnig: “Of course it works. People feel addressed with ‘Thy will be done’. But that’s not how it works. The Lord’s Prayer is one of the most important parts of Holy Scripture. You can’t just misuse it for an advertising message. No, that doesn’t have to be the case.” Andreas Mölzer reacts with little understanding to Abbot Pius Maurer of the Lilienfeld Abbey, who severely criticized the FPÖ poster: “Now, don’t pretend that this is blasphemy. This is just artificial indignation. Abbot Maurer should rather get angry when there are real problems. For example, about the Islamization in Austria. And the fact that Christians are now only a minority.”
Referendum on the death penalty?
Asked whether referendums, as proposed by Kickl, should be the basis for legislative decisions, Glawischnig replied: “I am already a supporter of direct democracy. But to associate the death penalty with this is an absurd debate. The Human Rights Convention opposes this, as do the fundamental rights of the EU. That is completely unacceptable.” Mölzer was critical: “Referenda have already become a business model. That has inflation.” In general, however, both duelists agreed that no one would seriously consider introducing the death penalty in Austria. Kickl made this clear straight away.
There was heated debate on Sunday about the AfD’s election successes in Saxony and Thuringia. Glawischnig: “The results are a political earthquake. AfD leader Höcke makes extreme statements. And the AfD is definitely right-wing extremist.” Mölzer, to put it into perspective: “The knowledge that the AfD is definitely right-wing extremist comes from a politically appointed authority. And we know what that means.”
You can see all the two duelists’ answers to this and many other political topics, such as the hotly debated role of the Identitarians in Austria, including the highly controversial emotional statement about ‘Srebrenica 2.0’, in the video above.
