Spain is at the bottom of Europe with only 2% truck drivers

Date:

In Spain, where there are 250,000 truck drivers, barely 5,000 are women, a meager 2%. The situation is no better in the rest of Europe, where the average number of women is 3%. Italy, with 7%, and Germany with 5%, are the two countries with the largest female presence. This is data for 2021 prepared by the International Road Transport Organization (IRU).

The General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) provides an X-ray of how the permits that allow trucks to drive in Spain are divided between men and women. So, and with data from 2021, only 7 out of a hundred new C-cards for box trucks were for women. In the case of the E, which gives access to the articulation, the ratio improves slightly, at 27 out of 100.

Andalusia is the autonomous community leading the number of women who have achieved both cards with 33% E and 19% C. In the first category, a total of 47,756 permits were issued, of which 13,174 were for women. Valencia (27.8%), Canarias (8.6%) and Murcia (8.6%) are listed below.

As for the C card, the DGT awarded 21,963, of which 1,746 were for women. Catalonia (10.6%), Valencia (10.4%), Galicia (9.7%), Castilla La Mancha (6.4%), Balearic Islands (6.3%) and Madrid (6.1%) are communities with over a hundred permits.

Combating the low presence of women in road transport is at the heart of the WoMAN initiative, a MAN Truck & Bus Iberia program to promote the training of women as professional drivers through grants in a sector that needs 15,000 carriers.

It is an economic tool to obtain the truck driver’s license, either the C for rigid or the E for articulated, and the Certificate of Professional Competency for Transport. These scholarships cover up to 70% of these costs.

The second edition of this idea is currently underway, although there are only a few days left before it closes. Women interested in applying can do so through the WOMAN website by clicking

Last year, ten women were part of this scholarship program. Three of them already work with trucks in their respective companies. For the rest, they complete their education, mainly with the aim of obtaining the E-card and at the same time looking for a job in this sector.

With WoMAN, women are not only looking for more driver’s licenses, but also helping them become better drivers once they have them. And in a context where the professional transport sector is growing in sustainability, the efficiency of the truck is just as important as that of driving.

For this reason, MAN will also make specific ProfiDrive training available to female drivers that will enable women, once they have obtained the CAP, to develop the necessary skills to get the most out of a latest-generation MAN TGX in real life. traffic, thereby optimizing spend. in fuel and thus emission savings, without forgetting road safety itself.
