Why does my car smell like strong cheese in the heat?

Date:

Over time, the air filter and ventilation ducts accumulate debris that translates with humidity and heat into mold that produces that foul-smelling aroma.

With the arrival of heat, many drivers get an unpleasant surprise when they start the air conditioning or climate control of the car. It smells like Gruyere cheese. You’ll go crazy looking around the cabin, looking for those remains of food or whatever stepped on it before you got into the vehicle. Eventually the pituitary gland gets used to it and the stench seems to disappear.

The
The origin of this unpleasant aroma must be found in the filter of the vehicle’s ventilation system. The vehicle is exposed to all kinds of environmental factors. From pollen, via insects, to humidity and heat. All these elements are locked in that filter, which on the other hand prevents them from ending up in the same ventilation ducts.

Rot and humidity creates mold in the filter, hence that strong cheese smell, which is at room temperature when the air conditioning is turned on, making the aroma more apparent. The more it cools, the less the aroma is perceptible.

This minor problem is solved with what used to be called “entertainment” of the vehicle. Something that can be done in free time. The first thing to do, which many manufacturers recommend, is that when the annual or mileage assessment is passed, the filter should be replaced. In some vehicles it is very easy to find. It is located behind the engine and glued to the chassis that separates it from the passenger compartment. A simple clip will loosen it and allow you to replace it with another brand. It does not cost much money, because the alternative of washing is just a waste of time, because the problem is not solved.

The second step, if the bad smell is not completely eliminated, is to clean all air conditioning ducts. Do not be afraid. This can be done by anyone with a little patience and dedication. It consists of using a disinfectant spray that they sell especially for it.

In this case, you should first clean the air holes as far as possible with a brush, a special brush or a small hand-held vacuum cleaner. Everybody. Not just what’s on the dash -up and down-, but also the existing ducts under the dash and, in some models, under the rear seat or in the center pillar between the two front seats that usually have vents for the passengers from behind.

The next step is to spray the channels with the spray. Thoroughly and start the air conditioning or cold air conditioning. Activate the air recirculation button in the vehicle – the one in which the silhouette of a car appears in a circle – and leave it for a long time to allow the disinfectant to penetrate the circuit. If there is still an odor, the fumigation with the spray can be repeated until it disappears.

General cleaning: A car is made up of different elements, and each of them deserves to be cleaned in a different way, so that it really deserves the adjective ‘hygienic’. The classic microfibre cloth for everything goes very well for plastics and glass, but upholstery, for example, needs a steamer if we really want to feel like it’s clean. Also, the classic handheld vacuums work very well for seats and nooks and crannies, and should be essential if we often travel with pets. For example, if we are smokers, we should pay attention to the fact that the smoke also comes through the roof of the vehicle.

outdoor air fresheners: It’s not a call to boycott these products, but if we clean our cars, we should stop using them because they’re counterproductive. Air fresheners mask the odor, but do not eliminate it. For this reason, cleaning the vehicle while one of them is running can complicate the task of detecting where the bad smell or traces of dirt it produces.

Check and take the car to rate: If the odor is very strong or characteristic, it may be coming from a source that we have not detected or cannot detect. In the first case, a thorough cleaning is essential as we may have left a piece of food or residue in a corner and it is as simple as removing it. But in other cases, the stench can arise from the air conditioning filters becoming clogged and spreading during their ignition or other internal obstructions that can only be resolved through professional maintenance and inspection.

strip home remedies: Past

from the air freshener we can go to home remedies that help to make the bad smell disappear while perfuming. Baking soda on mats and seats helps regulate pH to neutralize odor, which can even be improved if we add grain mustard or charcoal to a solution of water (beware if the upholstery is white or clear). If we want a longer lasting perfume, even than that of the air fresheners for once we have left the car very clean, the bags of aromatic herbs, cotton impregnated with essences or lemon peels or coffee beans are very effective.
