Internet satire – Czechia mocks annexation of Russia

Date:

Internet hit: a Czech satirical platform declares Kaliningrad annexed.

After the successful referendum, 97.9% of Kaliningrad residents decided to join the Czech Republic. This can be read on a web page that has been clicked thousands of times and that looks like a conventional tourism portal. What started as a small satirical project has turned into a real internet hit, which is not only laughed at in the Czech Republic, which currently holds the EU Council Presidency.

Satirical response to Russian annexation
The platform is the satirical answer to the Russian annexation of Ukrainian regions and declares the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad to be Czech territory. Historical Background: The town was named Koenigsberg in the 13th century by German knights in honor of the then King of Bohemia, Přemysl Ottokar. Later, Königsberg became part of Prussia first and then also of the German Empire. After the end of World War II, East Prussia was divided between Poland and the Soviet Union, and the area around Kaliningrad remained with Russia after their dissolution.

The joke became widespread: there are reports of the construction of a beer pipeline and the ship “Karel Gott”, the television has included the alleged new area in the weather forecast. The US embassy in Prague is also participating, jokingly offering aircraft carriers. Only Russia is not laughing.
