“Can’t go on like this” – Refugees in the garden: Border community screams

Date:

Roman Kainrath (SPÖ), mayor of Lutzmannsburg (Burgenland) is desperate. According to him, between 20 and 40 refugees are stranded every day in his marketplace on the border with Hungary. They left clothes and garbage in the forest. In addition, a resident told him that she was surprised by a refugee in the garden. “People are very concerned. How is this going on?” asks Kairath.Meanwhile, anger rises among the federal government over the new tent strategy for the reception of migrants.

“There is a route through the forest area and you see a strategy of the human trafficking mafia. First small groups cross the border to tie up troops, and then large groups cross the border elsewhere,” explains Kainrath. “I’m not someone who says ‘we mustn’t help’, but how is this supposed to go on?”

“The territory is worthless”
The hunters are already desperate, the area is worthless. “She was already collecting garbage, there were tons of clothes,” Kaiinrath reported. A resident also told him she was surprised by a refugee in the garden eating grapes: “He didn’t steal them, he was hungry. But these isolated cases are disturbing. It can’t go on like this.” Another civilian was hiding during a forest walk when 15 to 20 young men approached her.

The detained persons are transported on a daily basis by coach. “The conditions are unimaginable day in and day out,” says the mayor and sees the police and army at the limit of their capabilities.

“Across Europe, uniform asylum standards are needed”
Kainrath is therefore pushing for European solutions. On the one hand, uniform asylum standards are needed across Europe: “So that no country is more interesting than another.” On the other hand, asylum applications must also be possible outside the external border. Last but not least, aid in the countries of origin must be intensified, according to the mayor and SPÖ MP.

SPÖ Burgenland against tents for refugees
Meanwhile, in the state of Burgenland, criticism is growing against the federal government for setting up tents for asylum seekers. SPÖ state manager Roland Fürst spoke out clearly against this measure. “There will certainly not be any big quarters, camps or tents in Burgenland,” he emphasized. The government in Vienna must “resign as soon as possible”.

“Hotspot of International Human Trafficking Crime”
The SPÖ Burgenland and governor Hans Peter Doskozil have been pointing out for months the difficult situation at the border with Burgenland, where 3,000 to 4,000 people enter the country illegally every week, Fürst said. The figures are reminiscent of the record years 2015 and 2016. The border with Burgenland has become a “hotspot for international human trafficking crime”.

Last but not least, Fürst pointed out that capacity in the state had been reached and that the asylum quota was met by almost 102 percent. There are currently 3,101 people in basic care, including 2,066 from Ukraine and 1,035 asylum seekers from other countries.

ÖVP Burgenland for distribution to other federal states
Burgenland is “very burdened with the high number of refugees and is reaching its limits,” said ÖVP club president Markus Ulram. The critical situation should not be exacerbated by tents for asylum seekers. With regard to the refugee problem, urgent measures are now needed “supported in solidarity by all Länder”. Short-term distribution to other federal states and then to other EU countries would be necessary.
