Everyone wants to go south – or back home: holiday traffic again caused long traffic jams and delays on local roads on Sunday. Once again Tyrol was the hotspot for traffic congestion – the A13 Brenner Autobahn and the B179 Fernpassstraße were particularly affected. There were also handicaps at the border near Kufstein or in Salzburg on the Walserberg.
One of the reasons for the car avalanches this weekend is the start of the holiday season in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Already on Sunday morning there were disruptions on the typical travel routes. Tyrol was particularly affected. There, traffic was stuck in pieces for miles on the B179 Fernpassstraße. There were also waiting times on the Brenner and Inntalautobahnen, as well as on Loferer Strasse near Ellmau and on the Tauernautobahn in Salzburg.
Motorists needed a lot of patience
The ÖAMTC spoke of several bottlenecks. Like almost every weekend, the drivers had to expect “longer time losses”, especially on the B179. On the Brenner motorway, the automobile club registered a traffic jam of six kilometers in both directions and in some cases a loss of time of 20 minutes. On the Inntal Autobahn A12 at the Kufstein/Kiefersfelden border crossing, there was a four-kilometre long traffic jam heading north.
In contrast, a loss of 20 minutes was recorded at the German border at the Walserberg on the A1.
Block treatment before tunnel
In some tunnels, traffic was only handled in blocks. The Lermooser tunnel on the B179 and the Brettfall tunnel on the B169 Zillertalstraße, among others, were affected.
