The residents were surprised and shocked at the same time when they discovered a snake on the terrace of the apartment building in Oberwaltersdorf (Lower Austria). The fire brigade had to turn out and went looking for the Esculapian snake.
The snake hid behind a raised bed when firefighters arrived. The fire service tried to find and then record the animal with a thermal imaging camera.
Snake fled into biotope
But the venture was not crowned with success, because the viper had already run off. She took refuge in a nearby biotope.
Adder not venomous, but the bite is painful
Although the Esculapian snake is non-venomous and completely harmless, it should not be provoked. Because a bite from the reptile is still extremely painful.
The distribution of the Esculapic snake extends from the Pyrenees and France across south-central Europe and the Balkans eastwards to the Black Sea. But the reptile also feels at home in Austria. The snakes become active in warm weather and it is not uncommon for Aesculappa snakes to be found in gardens or near houses, as was recently the case in Oberwaltersdorf.
