In Pakistan, special forces have prepared for a high-risk cable car rescue mission. In the mountainous north of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, a military helicopter circled a gondola in which six children and two adults were trapped, police said. According to the army, special forces would now have to abseil to the gondola, which was suspended only by a steel cable. The incident took place in Battagram district, above a deep ravine.
According to a report in the “Dawn” newspaper, a cable from the cable car broke earlier this morning as the children were on their way to school.
The occupants of the gondola were trapped at an altitude of about 900 meters and waited for hours for help. “Any little miscalculation can lead to disaster,” said rescue official Bilal Faizi.
‘We don’t even have drinking water’
A 20-year-old told the Pakistani TV channel Geo TV the dramatic hours from the gondola. “We don’t even have drinking water,” the young man complained.
16-year-old collapsed
A 16-year-old with heart problems collapsed and passed out for several hours. The boy was on his way to a hospital. Acting Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar ordered the rescue authorities to mobilize all available resources for the operation.
