The annual national siren test will take place again this afternoon: around 8,300 fire sirens will be subjected to the Civil Protection test alarm and their operation will be tested. In addition, KATWARN Austria is also being tested again. “Howling” takes place between 12:00 and 12:45.
After the “Siren probe” signal, the three civil protection signals “Warning”, “Alarm” and “All clear” are broadcast throughout Austria. This serves to check the technical equipment of the warning and alarm system and is also intended to familiarize the population with the signals and their meaning.
KATWARN test activated
During the test alarm, a test activation of KATWARN Austria/Austria is also carried out by the Federal Warning Center. This system, which transmits information and warnings from various authorities based on location, event or subject to mobile devices such as smartphones, has been supplementing the warning capabilities for several years using loudspeakers, sirens and media.
Extensive siren warning
The warning and alarm system is managed by the Ministry of Home Affairs together with the offices of the state governments. Austria is one of the few countries with a comprehensive siren warning. Depending on the dangerous situation, the activation takes place from the Federal Warning Center in the situation center of the Ministry of the Interior, from the state warning centers of the individual states or the district warning centers.
