Despite all guarantees, the share of renewable energy in Austria is constantly decreasing. In contrast, electricity from decomposition reactors such as Temelín is increasing. The estimated share of nuclear energy that we purchase is between 3.2 and 11.6 percent.
According to a study published days ago, almost two-thirds of Austrians (64 percent) are against nuclear energy. 40 percent of them do not want to use nuclear energy under any circumstances.
But in some cases this is necessary, emphasizes Stefan Moidl, director of IG Windkraft. E-Control recently presented its annual electricity labeling report.
E-Contol’s report is sobering
Despite all the promises, he paints a sobering picture. The estimated share of nuclear energy that we purchase is between 3.2 and 11.6 percent. According to Moidl, it has not been possible to reduce this significantly in recent years. Meanwhile, the share of renewable energy sources has even decreased. While this was still 85.9 percent in 2020, the share of wind energy etc. fell to 83.72 percent in 2022. The share of electricity from foreign sources has exploded.
Europe is fully on course for nuclear energy: warning from Austria
According to Moidl, “a low point”: one electricity trader even reported 73.8 percent of the supply as nuclear energy. The only feasible path to a nuclear weapons-free Austria is to expand renewable energy sources, Moidl said.
As is known, there is increasing discussion at EU level about the role of nuclear energy. A real point of contention! Despite all the warnings, countries like France see this as a useful technology to make energy production climate-friendly! GLOBAL 2000 expert Dr. Reinhard Uhrig warned in September in the “Krone”: “We must not give in an inch here at EU level!” Austrian EU mandate Günther Sidl also warned about this.
