Significant increase – bitter cold causes record heating in Vienna

Date:

The coldest day of the year so far has set a heating record in Vienna. Since February 2021, there has not been as much need for district heating in the federal capital as this Tuesday: when the outside temperature at 8 a.m. was minus 9 degrees, the peak power was around 2,000 megawatts. This limit was almost reached on Wednesday morning.

Such performances were last recorded on February 11, 2021. For comparison, on an average winter day, the maximum thermal power in Vienna is 1,600 megawatts, Wien-Energie said in a statement on Wednesday.

The demand for heating will probably decrease again soon
Since the turn of the year, with average temperatures between five and ten degrees Celsius, the required amount of heat has doubled. On the one hand, this is due to the sharp drop in temperature, but also because work in the city has now restarted after the Christmas holidays.

As temperatures rise, heating needs should also drop to average levels. Compared to the 2022/23 heating season, the temperature over the past three months was on average 0.9 degrees Celsius higher than last year.
