The UN entrusts the former French foreign minister with a report on UNRWA, which will be published in April

Date:

The group must evaluate “whether the agency is doing everything possible to ensure neutrality and respond to allegations of serious irregularities when they arise.”

The UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterresappointed this Monday the external committee responsible for studying the integrity of the Palestinian Refugee Agency (UNRWA), with the former French Foreign Minister being the main person responsible Catherine Colonnawith a view to the publication of the final report at the end of April.

Colonna will lead a group outside the United Nations that also includes the Raoul Wallenberg Institute from Sweden, the Chr. Michelsen Institute from Norway and the Danish Institute for Human Rights will participate. They will start their work on February 14 and provide an initial analysis to Guterres by the end of March, a statement from the Secretary General’s office said.

The group must evaluate”whether the agency does everything possible to ensure neutrality and respond to allegations of serious misconduct when they arise“, after UNRWA removed more than a dozen employees for their alleged cooperation in the attacks carried out by the Hamas group on October 7.

Researchers should therefore evaluate the existing mechanisms and whether they are actually applied in practice, also taking into account ‘the operational, political and security context’ in which the agency operates, whose work is crucial in the current humanitarian crisis. .
