Both last week and Saturday evening, the community building on Simmeringer Muhrhoferweg was broken into and set on fire. While some residents angrily remove charred remains from their basement spaces, the others no longer trust anyone to cross their path. A local “Krone” inspection.
The sun is shining from the sky, countless families and retirees use Saturday afternoon for an early spring walk in the lush green parks around the enormous municipal building between Muhrhoferweg and Flammweg. The Crown’s local inspection has not revealed much that the situation in the complex with almost 1,000 apartments is tense due to suspected serial burglars and arsonists.
Zündler struck just 50 meters from the police
Only when you approach stairs 14 and 16, located in the same apartment building and only fifty meters from the Sangergasse police station, do you see the torn-out basement windows and blackened facades. There was a fire in the basement on Saturday night; numerous residents had to be brought out by the fire brigade.
Blue light every week: “Not again”
Those same blue lights also irritated Erna (name changed upon request). Despite the drama, the cheerful retiree leads the “Krone” to the charred cellar with a smile and a flashlight. The week before, everything on the 14 stairs was packed with fire engines – a 16-year-old suffered severe smoke poisoning in the inferno, also in the basement. ‘Not again,’ Erna thought to herself as the fire brigade headed for her stairs. She still stayed in her apartment.
Kindergarten on the ground floor of Brandhaus
However, the majority of residents were evacuated outside. The fact that the fire did not break out during the day is a relief for many here. There is a kindergarten on the ground floor. It’s hard to imagine what could have happened. Now many residents are afraid of possible upcoming fires. Anyone who behaves suspiciously becomes suspicious. Erna also doesn’t want to open the door for anyone anymore.
Unrest around the Muhrhoferweg
Since then, the neighborhood has not really wanted to calm down. Shortly after the “Krone” leaves the Muhrhoferweg on Saturday, the fire brigade rushes into the Saenergasse. All clear, no arson. One lunch was burned. A few hours later, a 58-year-old died in an inferno in her apartment on Lorygasse. There is no arson here either.
However, on the Muhrhoferweg, people are already fearing for next weekend. No one has been caught yet. In the 1970s, a series of fires kept the area in suspense. By the way, the fire was started by a caretaker at the time.
