Italian police have seized almost a million counterfeit €50 notes of deceptively genuine quality during a raid on a printing plant in Naples. The responsible Public Prosecution Service estimates the total amount at around 48 million euros.
Seven suspects were arrested in Tuesday morning’s raid, including the alleged leader of the counterfeit gang. They are all said to belong to an offshoot of the so-called Napoli group, which has been under investigation for some time.
According to the investigating authorities, the flowers were seized from a printing company in an industrial area. The counterfeit money is printed using the offset process, which results in significantly higher quality than digital printing.
