The situation in the Middle East continues to escalate: following increasing tensions, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) has approved operational plans for an offensive in Lebanon. Israel’s chief diplomat previously threatened ‘all-out war’.
“As part of the situation assessment, operational plans for an offensive in Lebanon were confirmed and approved. “Decisions were made to further increase the preparedness of troops in the field,” the IDF said. Tensions had recently increased between Israel and the Lebanon-based radical Islamist group Hezbollah.
Katz talks about ‘total war’
Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz had previously threatened the pro-Iranian Shiite militia with annihilation in an “all-out war”. “We are close to the point where we will decide to change the rules of the game against Hezbollah and Lebanon,” Katz’s office said on Tuesday. “In an all-out war, Hezbollah will be destroyed and Lebanon will be severely affected.”
Since the war in the Gaza Strip began more than eight months ago, there have been repeated shellings on the border between Israel and Lebanon. There, the Iran-backed Hezbollah militia regularly engages in gun battles with the Israeli army in support of its Islamist ally Hamas.
Assassination of Hezbollah commander
The militia stepped up its attacks on northern Israel last week after a senior Hezbollah commander was killed in an Israeli attack.
