A volcanic eruption on the Italian island of Stromboli in the Mediterranean Sea caused a natural spectacle on Wednesday evening. A stream of lava flowed from the crater of the eponymous volcano north of Sicily and made its way through the valley to the sea.
Videos on social media showed thick smoke rising from the spot where glowing lava flowed into the sea.
No information was available on damage or injuries.
Volcano became a tourist attraction
Like Etna in Sicily, Stromboli is an active volcano. The almost 930-meter-high Stromboli erupts regularly and has therefore become a tourist attraction.
The volcanic island is one of the Aeolian Islands in northern Sicily.
