The merchandise would be transported by train and stored in Spanish silos for later export by ship.
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine threatens global food security. With 20 million tons of grain still blocked in the country, European countries have launched several initiatives to release and distribute this commodity. Spain has led the implementation of a project to transport 8,000 tons of grain from Ukraine from July to September.
The initiative, in collaboration with France, Luxembourg and Poland, consists of transporting the grain by train to Spain, from where it can be exported to other countries by ship. The idea is that the Ukrainian authorities will move the grain closer to the border with Poland. There it will be loaded onto French and Spanish trains and travel through different countries until it reaches Spain, where it will be stored in silos on the Mediterranean coast, such as Cartagena or Tarragona, from where it can depart by ship. Saving the grain will not entail major costs for Spain, according to official sources, a few thousand euros.
The blockade of Ukrainian ports has hampered grain exports. Departure over land is more difficult, because the characteristics of Ukrainian trains prevent them from running on European railways. Spanish technology will be key, the same sources say, in this process, helping to unload Ukrainian trains and load European trains at the border with Poland.
The project will start on July 15 and will begin as a pilot experience that will move 600 tons of grain. From August, the number of trains will increase and 8,000 tons are expected to be transported in September.
