Will the ceasefire hold? – The Israeli army reported incidents in southern Lebanon

Date:

A ceasefire has been in force between the Israeli army and Hezbollah in Lebanon since Wednesday morning. During the day, the army reported several incidents in the south of the country. US President Joe Biden, meanwhile, said he and the French government would ensure the agreement was fully implemented.

Immediately before the ceasefire took effect, both the Israeli army and Hezbollah continued their attacks. The Lebanese capital Beirut and ‘military targets’ in Tel Aviv, Israel, were particularly affected. Fighting has been intensifying for more than a year.

By Wednesday morning, tens of thousands of refugees were already on their way back to their homes in southern Lebanon. However, the Israeli army imposed night-time restrictions on movement. These would apply until Thursday at 7 a.m., Army Avichay Adraee announced on Platform X. In addition, the population is prohibited from crossing the Litani River to the south during this time.

The Lebanese army urges patience
The agreement brokered by the US and French governments calls for Israeli forces to gradually leave southern Lebanon within 60 days. Hezbollah would withdraw north, beyond the Litani River. Instead, the Lebanese army should take control.

They now urged people to be patient and began increasing their presence in the region bordering Israel. The pro-Iranian Hezbollah militia said it wanted to work with the army. No one can force the residents to leave their villages. Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati praised the ceasefire as a “new chapter” for his country. Israel must adhere to the agreements.

“Victory celebrations” in Hezbollah strongholds
Meanwhile, residents of Hezbollah strongholds on Beirut’s southern outskirts celebrated the deal as a “victory” over Israel. Scores of people rode through the streets on motorcycles, waving the yellow flag of the pro-Iranian militia. Many buildings are in ruins after being bombed by the Israeli air force.
