Sri Lanka’s President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has traveled to the Maldives on a military plane, as confirmed by the air authorities and the office of the Sri Lankan Prime Minister, although it is not known where he was transferred shortly afterwards in the midst of a strong police cordon, according to information from airport officials gathered by the media
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesingue, acting president, has stated that the state of emergency and has imposed immediate curfew in the province of the capital.
Rajapaksa fled her official residence last Saturday before being attacked by thousands of desperate people as a result of the crisis in the country, which left Sri Lanka in a serious economic and institutional situation.
Despite the fact that, after the popular uprising, Rajaoaksa announced his resignation from office, using the presidential powers he still enjoys, “at the request of the government, with the approval of the Ministry of Defense, and under the rules and regulations of immigration and emigration, a Sri Lankan Air Force plane has been assigned to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, his wife and two other security personnel,” the air force said.
Several members of the Rajapaksa family, who held senior government positions, have also tried to leave the country since the riots.
Rajapaksa’s resignation is expected to take place on Wednesday. Sri Lanka’s political parties agreed on Monday to appoint a new interim president on July 20 to end the power vacuum created by Rajapaksa’s departure.
