The construction of the controversial tunnel spider in Feldkirch (Vorarlberg) has so far been estimated at 260 to 275 million euros.
The large-scale project consisting of four tunnel branches, which are connected in an underground roundabout, is intended to relieve the Feldkirch Bärenkreuzung, but is controversial. Proponents see the construction project as the ideal solution for traffic, air and noise nuisance in Montfortstadt, opponents doubt this and demand an evaluation.
The state originally quoted the total cost of 260 million euros for the city tunnel. The state contributes the lion’s share, the federal government contributes 40 million euros and the city of Feldkirch twelve million. It had long been clear that this cost estimate would not hold up. The government currently assumes total costs of around 300 million euros. Whether this will continue is difficult to predict at the moment.
Time is running out
According to the EIA report, the tunnel must be built by 2030 at the latest. The works are on schedule: the main tunnel is to be tendered for the end of 2022/beginning of 2023, construction will start at the end of 2023/beginning of 2024.
At their meeting on Tuesday, members of the state government decided to tender for the main work on the major road project – but not unanimously. Contrary to the coalition agreement, the Greens did not vote again. Another pain point within the coalition.
