Perfect rescue chain – emergency medical assistance after a gardening accident

Date:

The Red Cross, the police and the ÖAMTC emergency doctor helicopter Christophorus 9 had to leave Friday afternoon for Breitenfurt in the district of Mödling (Lower Austria). The reason: a serious accident while gardening.

A woman from Lower Austria was working in the garden of her home when she was seriously injured. An employee of the Breitenfurt medical center heard the pensioners cry in pain and did not hesitate for a moment. The man ran to the accident victim, gave him first aid and set in motion a “perfect rescue chain”, as Red Cross spokeswoman Sonja Kellner told “Krone”.

Teamwork as key to mission success
The Notruf Niederösterreich control center immediately dispatched a Red Cross ambulance, as well as the Christophorus 9 emergency doctor helicopter and an executive patrol car to the accident site. Police officers secured the helicopter landing site. Paramedics and Christophorus’ emergency medical team then looked after the approximately 70-year-old patient together. After stabilization, the Lower Austrian was taken to a hospital for further treatment with a Red Cross ambulance.

Good first aid can be learned
“Operations like this show very well the importance of showing moral courage and providing first aid. You can’t do anything wrong, the worst would be to do nothing,” says Kellner, who also points to the extensive range of courses offered by the Red Cross.
