A careless and careless trip to the Mahdlgupf via ferrata in Steinbach am Attersee in Upper Austria cost a German family a lot of money. She now receives a hefty bill from the mountain rescue service.
The rescuers spent four hours on the Mahdlgupf to rescue the family, who had boarded three children, ages five, seven and 12.
Difficulty of the via ferrata underestimated
They only walked in sandals, wore bicycle helmets and had underestimated the difficulty of the via ferrata, one of the most demanding in Austria. At the “chocolate overhang” it had literally gotten too steep for them, so they turned around.
Other mountaineers offered help to the already dehydrated children – they also didn’t have enough water with them – but the parents refused. It wasn’t until the mountain rescue team arrived that we were happy. “The hour of use costs 425 euros,” says the mountain rescue service, which is now sending the bill to Germany. The rescue was in action for four hours and the family can now pay 1,700 euros.
