Son reported presumed dead at funeral

Date:

A family in Honduras experienced a tremendous shock. When they were about to bury their supposedly murdered son (14), he contacted them via video call. He is not dead, but on the border between Guatemala and Mexico.

As several media reported, the body of a teenager was found in La Entrada (near the border with Guatemala) on October 15. She has multiple gunshot wounds to her head and neck and her face is disfigured. Although key features are no longer visible, family members identified the body as 14-year-old Osman Adonay Urbina. The decisive factor was a burn scar on the victim’s arm. The police then closed the case.

On the way to the US
A mistake, as it turned out. Because while the family is holding a vigil at the youngster’s coffin, the grieving mother’s phone suddenly rings. Osman, who was presumed dead, made a video call and assured his family that he was not dead. ‘I’m standing here at the border. “I’m alive, I’m not dead,” he reportedly said. He had left for the US a few weeks earlier.

“We were surprised because friends said, ‘It’s Osman.’ I thought it was a joke,” the mother told local media. Despite the relief, the family continued to wonder who the teenager in the coffin was who they mistakenly thought was their son. They called the police, who further investigation discovered that the dead were another missing teenager, 15-year-old Jimmy Sarmiento.

According to Osman’s mother Vilma, the two teenagers looked alike. “We were confused and so were the police,” she concluded.
