The Carinthian state capital Klagenfurt cannot draw up a budget for 2025 due to the financial crisis, even though all projects have been deducted; minus 35 million euros remains. Mayor Christian Scheider speaks in the “Krone” interview about the city’s financial concerns and the costs when it comes to overtime.
Crown: The financial need is great. Many municipalities can hardly make budgets for 2025. Klagenfurt is also under pressure from debt. Although they have reduced overtime, according to the accounts, overtime payments required €6 million last year, and €6.8 million the year before. What should happen next?
Mayor Christian Scheider: Overtime in the fire brigade or drinking water contamination cannot be prevented. I am now constantly criticized for things that have happened in the past period. Same salaries, same payments. Now we all have to look very carefully. Where can you save extra? This is also my department in the HR field. The reward comes from the specialized departments. Which additional tasks an employee is given is determined by the specialized departments. For the first time, I am now making agreements with the personnel and professional departments and the municipal council. Now there is a recording stop. What does this mean for the coming years? We’ll see. Because now there are automatically fewer employees.
